More Chandan Yatra in New Talavan By Gopal Das Posted May 31, 2003 Dear Devotees, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada! This year we celebrated the Chandan Yatra festival a second time at New Talavan temple. Actually, in India this festival is celebrated for 21 days, but here nobody knows how to put chandan [sandalwood] on Lord Krishna. That's why we celebrate only three days. A response to "Honesty is the Best Policy" By Krishna-kirti das (HDG) Posted May 31, 2003 Dear Mataji, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada! I sympathize with your situation, as my wife and I also live outside an established ashrama and well know the difficulties of maintaining a healthy spiritual life away from close association with devotees. I hold down a job that requires me to travel two hours a day, and the job, at that, frequently requires me to work more than eight hours. Our Western host culture is more often than not caustic for our Krishna consciousness, and it is my experience that without some sort of special shelter from this social and cultural environment, our Krishna consciousness is almost certain to suffer. Although my wife and I live far from any temple community, we do happen to have such a special shelter that keeps us straight: A preaching engagement. Even if one is in the most downtrodden situation, if one somehow or other engages him or herself in direct preaching, one will very quickly be delivered from all difficulties. By Thakur Haridas das Posted May 31, 2003 "Name Withheld" has shown admirable courage by honestly revealing her mind, weaknesses, and struggle for spiritual growth. I empathize with her feelings about wearing devotional clothing and being torn between her personal psychophysical reality and the surrendered spiritual ideal. We tend to develop a stereotyped picture of what a devotee is and feel discouraged when we don't fit that image. But each of us is a unique individual. We must get past external appearances and find the inner essence of bhakti within our own heart. New York Ratha-Yatra Posted May 30, 2003 Dear Devotees and Friends, New York ISKCON cordially invites all devotees and friends to join us for an ecstatic week of hearing, chanting, feasting, and sadhu-sanga to celebrate the annual Ratha-Yatra celebration and Festival of India in New York City on June 14, 2003. Festival Highlights: Super-ecstatic kirtans and bhajans with ISKCON's senior devotees and leaders, Hare Krishna Gurukulis, and Youth from all over the world. Special Guest: H.H. Sacinandana Swami, who is visiting the U.S.A for the very first time and is very eager to share his realizations with all of us here. From Jayo das Posted May 30, 2003 Hare Krishna. Jaya Srila Prabhupada. On May 29 at about 9-1- AM CST USA, I will be undergoing, if all is well, an (electric) cardioconversion. If it is successful— it will take some time to know— then it will convert my heart to a normal rhythm and allow me function better without morbidity. I am hoping to continue to serve the devotees and Srila Prabhupada. I humbly request any thoughts and prayers you may care to offer. Dandavats. Let us all pray for his complete recovery.] [Article complete on this page] By Subhadra-mayi dasi Posted May 30, 2003 Dear Anonymous, I had to smile, reading the title of your letter: "Honesty is the Best Policy— Name Withheld," but then I started to read your letter, and I didn't smile so much anymore. I felt really sad. I didn't feel sad so much for what you wrote, but I thought about the title again. My concern was, Why it is that some people feel they can't say who they are when they are being really honest? Because the way you described yourself can be a description of so many devotees. You aren't an exception. You are an exception in being able to recognize it, come out with it (kind of), and ask for help. By Devahotra dasa Posted May 30, 2003 Dear Mataji and Other Vaisnavas, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glory to Srila Prabhupada! I fully agree with you that our inclination is not to reveal our inner anarthas and demons and what the Christian mystic John of the Cross calls "the dark night of the soul." Yet this is what we need to do. We need to share the truth of where we are at. We need to have the humility to say, "This is my weakness and pain, and this is what I am doing."
Honesty
Is the Best Policy Dear Vaisnavas, Please accept my humble and respectful obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada! I write as an anonymous devotee who is struggling in spiritual life. I sincerely seek your insight, mercy, and advice. I don't know if others are going through the same things that I am. Why are we often afraid to reveal where we really are on the spiritual path? I guess the real question that I ask myself is why am I afraid to reveal where I am on the spiritual path?

Kavichandra Swami, and H.H. Ramai Swami have all toured with the youths.

Etiquette and VNN The following letter was sent to VNN in response to an article by Sriman Hansaduta Prabhu which referred to His Holiness Jayadvaita Maharaja, simply as "Jayadvaita." Dear Editors of VNN, Danadabat Pranam and Jaya Srila Prabhupada. I am deeply concerned that a news network that purports to serve the Vaisnava community should choose to ignore the basic tenets of Vaisnava etiquette while publishing letters from its readers. The recent story from Sriman Hansaduta Prabhu carries the caption: "Just what is Jayadvaita's point?" I am surprised that the editors did not think it prudent to change it to: "Just what is Jayadvaita Maharaja's point?" Text and Photos By Vrindavan Lila Devi Dasi Posted May 18, 2003 Please accept my most humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada! This year's celebration of Nrisimha Chaturdasi had a new feature in it, introduced by Bhadracharu Prabhu. After Srimad Bhagavatam class there was an unusual ceremony for collecting bhoga donations. A large balance-type scale was set up in the middle doorway of the main entrance to the temple. H.H. Jayapataka Swami inaugurated the ceremony by setting an example. Nrisimha
Chaturdasi Text and Photos by Vrindavan Lila Devi Dasi Posted May 17, 2003 Nrisimha Chaturdasi in Mayapur was ecstatic. H.H. Bhakti Vikasa Swami said in his class that when different forms of Godhead manifest as Deity forms in a place where there is already a presiding Deity, They take on the mood of presiding Deity. The presiding Deity in Mayapur is Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, so Sri Nrisimha Deva took onto His mood here. Volume 4, Chapter 33 By Indradyumna Swami Posted May 16, 2003 April 20 - May 14, 2003 The last three weeks of the preaching tour in America were particularly rigorous. Sri Prahlad and I traveled to numerous temples, spending just hours in some while in others holding three programs a day for a week. I never took rest before midnight. The pace was so intense that on one occasion while giving an arrival address, I forgot the name of the town. I began my talk by saying, "I am very happy to be here in . . ." I then paused as I tried to remember where it was we had arrived, and Sri Prahlad had to quickly help me recall. Constant travel, late-night programs, and irregular sleep wore me down to where he also had to help me from the floor after I paid obeisances or to climb the stairs of an apartment building.

Boat Festival Here are some pictures I took of Radha-Madhava's Boat Festival in Mayapur. Some of the pictures are not so clear because everyone and everything was moving. Video clips of the boat festival will be posted on www.mayapur.info. Every evening during the first week of Chandan Yatra, small Deities of Sri Sri Radha-Madhava go to Srila Prabhupada's lake to enjoy Their water pastimes. There is a very pleasant atmosphere as the evening falls and the breeze carries drops of water from the fountain and sprinkles the faces of the devotees, bringing relief from the heat of the day. The
Departure of By Brajhari Das Posted May 9, 2003 Dear Maharajas and Prabhus, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupad. With a heavy heart, I want to inform you that one of our old devotees, named Jagadananda Pandit Das, left his body on the 29th of April at 5 pm. Jagadananda Pandit Prabhu, who was popularly known as Panditji, was actually a pandit— a very scholarly devotee. He joined Sri Sri Radha-Rasabihariji temple at Juhu, Mumbai, in the year 1984 and served Their Lordships till his last breath. He was a disciple of H.H. Gopal Krishna Maharaj. He distributed thousands of Srila Prabhupada's books throughout India as a leader of the traveling sankirtan party. He participated in Srila Prabhupada's Marathon for more than 13 years in one particular place, called Churchgate, in downtown Mumbai. I remember that on several occasions he distributed more than 1000 Bhagavad-Gitas in a single day. Swami's From Adi-kurma Das Posted May 7, 2003 "There is a reason for this walking fever," says Bhaktimarga Swami. "The point is about peace and awareness. I love this country, but I am concerned. We are big-time consumers and suffer terrible problems within our families. We are set in superficial coziness. We can do better." After covering 8,500 kilometers in 210 days in 1996, from west coast to east coast, he has rekindled the ambitious trek and will start on May 3rd at Cape Spear, Newfoundland— North America's easternmost point. He will traverse the entire country and will end in Victoria, B.C. From the "Gita Revisions Explained"conference on PAMHO.net Srila Prabhupada and Hayagriva: Dispelling an Internet Myth By Jayadvaita Swami Posted May 7, 2003 The story, posted some time back, of how Hayagriva Prabhu painstakingly sat with Srila Prabhupada for two years to fine tune the text of Bhagavad-gita As It Is is only just one more internet myth. Who says? Hayagriva. Criticism and insults I can tolerate. Fictitious history is harder to bear. So let's set things straight, shall we? According to the published story, "While it is not generally known, for two years Srila Prabhupada sat with Hayagriva and patiently transformed His intimate realizations into a level of refined expression onto which He then comfortably placed His name. The resulting literary expression was the wondrous 1972 Bhagavad-Gita As It Is." There's a good reason why this tale is "not generally known"— it's a falsehood. Jewelry

Candan Yatra: More Photos Ganga Ganga By Kavicandra Swami Posted May 6, 2003 We have just returned from a three-week Ganga Safari. Every year after Gaura Purnima, Jayapataka Swami takes an international group of devotees on a preaching-pilgrimage tour. Each year, he goes to different parts of India. This year the plan was Bangladesh, since the Bangladesh government had invited us, but with all the wars, they backed out. So with last minute planning, a Ganga Safari was organized. Marichi Prabhu, the manager, secured the boats just three days before departure. By Malati Devi Dasi Posted May 6, 2003 Sunday morning, May 4th, the West Virginia State Police contacted the New Vrindavan authorities with the news that they had discovered the body of Dhruva Patel, age 27 years. His mother, Manasa Ganga (Mira Patel) had reported him missing several days earlier when he failed to return from a walk in nearby woodlands. The State Troopers' verdict is that death was due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A brief note has been recovered that did not state any specific cause although some of his close friends feel that he may have been experiencing depression. He was wearing a Narashimadev pendant at the time of departure. Dhruva was the eldest son of Manasa Ganga and Hari Kirtana, longtime residents of New Vrindavan. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his two brothers— Shyam, age 19, Dev Kumar age 23— and his sister Mondakini, age 21. Dhruva Patel: A Wonderful Person By Kitri Waterman Posted May 6, 2003 My mom just confirmed that Dhruva, Manasa Ganga's son, has shot himself. He had been missing for about six days or so, and the police had started to search for him. Some turkey hunters found his body in the woods around Kirtanananda's old house and the Keshi Ghat area. He was a wonderful person. Please send him your prayers and love. — Kitri [Article complete on this page] From Bhadra Govinda Dasa Posted May 6, 2003 Four devotees from Singapore have given some of their personal gold jewelry to the deities, during this year's Gaura Purnima festival.
